Description
The name
Ussassai, according to local tradition, is to be
connected to a Marco Usai, a swineherd who settled here
because of the abundance of acorns. According to Prof.
Pitttau, instead, the name could derive from pre-Roman
Ossassi, a term that indicates the stachide, an
endemic Sardinian plant. According to others Ussassai (Ussassa
in the local dialect) means “this side of the s’assa”.
Assa means rocky crag, wall , ravine. The entire
territory, particularly in the north and east, is studded
with the characteristic taccus

The most
characteristic is the limestone complex of Su Casteddu’e
Jeni-situated north-west- with its pinnacles and bizarre
shapes, which dominates the valley below, creating a scenery
with the suggestive fascination of a far-west landscape.
Numerous forests shroud its territory, aand there are also
many water springs at the foot of these limestone mountains.
The most popular ones are at Niala and Milisai,
destinations of holiday-makers and tourists who enjoy
spending the day in the shade. Su pissu’e Irtzioni
renowned for the presence of ponte di ferro (an iron
railway bridge), and for the proximity of Niala.
